The second in charge of Britain, when former Prime Minister Tony Blair joined the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, has used strong words to condemn the war, describing it as illegal. In a new op-ed published by UK media, Former Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott writes that Blair had pledged to join the then US President George W Bush in the invasion of Iraq eight months before it happened. Prescott says their first objective was regime change in Iraq, which made the war illegal, as pointed out by former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan in 2004. Prescott was among the MPs who voted for the Iraq war. But he’s now claiming that Blair stopped ministers from fully discussing the legality of the war. Prescott’s comments come days after the publication of the scathing Chilcot Inquiry report which strongly criticized Blair over the invasion of Iraq. The report said Blair led the UK into the war without seeking all peaceful options.
