The United States threatens to take action against China, if it goes ahead with the construction of a building on one of the South China Sea islets. US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter has warned that the development of the structure will prompt action from the US and other countries in the region. He said the construction would fuel tensions and isolate China. Beijing is reportedly planning to establish an outpost on Scarborough Shoal, two-hundred thirty kilometers off the Philippine coast. Manila claims the island and says it lies in the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone. The South China Sea has become a source of tension between China, the US, and some regional countries. Washington accuses Beijing of militarizing the Sea by creating artificial islands. Beijing, in turn, is opposed to increased US naval patrols and exercises in the region.
