Russia’s foreign minister has denounced what he described as NATO’S greed for geopolitical space and its attempts to encircle opponents. Speaking to Swedish media, Sergei Lavrov rejected NATO’s accusations that Moscow has been carrying out dangerous maneuvers near the alliance’s bases. He noted that it is NATO that is expanding toward Russian borders, not the opposite. He noted that the West’s military deployments near Russian borders have already violated the basic 1997 NATO-Russia Founding Act. Lavrov said Moscow is ready for dialogue with NATO, but insisted that Moscow will react to the alliance’s military buildup near Russia’s borders. On the West’s sanctions, Lavrov said that Russia is a self-sufficient country and will rely on its domestic resources to avoid dependence on Europe.
