Netanyahu made the comment during a ceremonial cabinet meeting held in the occupied land. Israeli media reports say he held the meeting there fearing Israel could come under pressure to return the occupied Syrian land. Netanyahu also said Syria would never return to what it was before the war and that it was time the world finally recognized Israel’s sovereignty over Golan. Israel occupied the Syrian territory in 19-67 and annexed it in 19-82. The international community has never recognized the annexation.

Syria has vowed to take back the Golan Heights from Israel by any means necessary. Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad made the remark after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a cabinet meeting that the plateau will remain in the regime’s hand forever. Mekdad said Damascus is even prepared to use military force to return the Golan Heights to Syria. He also accused Israel of being behind terror attacks against Syria and called the Israeli cabinet meeting a political attack. The Syrian official further called on Arab countries to help take back all the occupied territories from Israel. Israel occupied the Syrian territory in 1967 and annexed it in 1982. The international community has never recognized the annexation.
