Casualties were reported after troops exchanged fire overnight, using artillery, mortars and heavy machine guns and helicopters. Armenian forces claim they’ve shot down an enemy chopper. But Azerbaijan has rejected this. Russian President Vladimir Putin has called for an immediate ceasefire in the region. Nagorno-Karabakh lies inside Azerbaijan, but is under the control of local ethnic Armenian forces and the Armenian military. The region has been running its own affairs since a war between Azerbaijan and Armenia ended in 1994. The three-year war claimed about thirty-thousand lives.
