China has accused the U.S. of militarizing the South China Sea. Chinese Foreign Ministry has voiced concerns over the presence of U.S. military aircraft and Navy vessels in the South China Sea. It says the joint exercises with regional partners raise tensions in the region and constitute quote- true militarization. China has deployed surface-to-air missiles on one of the islands in the area. The buildup is seen as part of Beijing’s efforts to claim virtually the entire disputed sea. The U-S says it has a national interest in the region’s stability and freedom of navigation in the South China Sea.
