The Iraqi prime minister has ordered the foreign ministry to lodge a formal complaint at the UN Security Council against Turkey’s incursion into the country. Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi wants the Security Council to order Turkey to withdraw its forces from Iraq immediately. Turkey deployed hundreds of troops at a camp near Iraq’s northern city of Mosul a week ago. Baghdad considers the deployment as a hostile act that violates Iraq’s sovereignty. It has repeatedly asked Turkey to withdraw its troops, saying they were deployed without the approval of the Iraqi government. Ankara, however, remains defiant. President Reccep Tayyip Erdogan says Turkish troops are at the camp near ISIL-held Mosul to train Iraqi and Kurdish forces. He says Turkey is determined to continue the training.
