Iraqi PM Demands 48-hr Deadline Be Met as Turkey Refuses to Withdraw

The Iraqi Prime Minister has called on NATO to push Turkey to pull out its forces from northern Iraq. Haider al-Abadi made the request in a telephone conversation with NATO’s Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. Abadi has described the incursion as a grave violation of Iraq’s sovereignty. Meanwhile, Abadi, in a televised speech renewed calls for Turkey to withdraw its forces from Iraq.

The Iraqi prime minister noted that Turkish forces are in the Iraqi soil without Baghdad’s knowledge or permission. Iraqi people have also gathered outside the Turkish embassy in Baghdad to protest against the Turkish military incursion. On Sunday, Baghdad gave Ankara 48 hours to withdraw all its troops from Iraq. But Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Chavushoglu says the troops won’t be withdrawn. The UN Security Council has held talks at Russia’s request on Turkey’s military operations in Iraq and Syria.
