The Deputy UN Secretary-General has blamed Israeli policies for escalation of violence across the occupied Palestinian territories. Jan Eliasson expressed concern over illegal settlement activities, settler violence and continued demolition of Palestinian homes. He said such actions are contrary to Tel Aviv’s stated intention to pursue a two-state solution. Eliasson made the remarks at a special meeting of the UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People. Addressing on behalf of the UN chief, he warned that the security in besieged Gaza Strip and in the occupied West Bank remains at very low point. The UN committee also adopted a resolution urging Israel to end its occupation of Palestinian territories. 170 members voted in favor of the non-binding resolution. The United States and Canada were among five countries that opposed the measure.
