Beijing Summons US Ambassador Over Warship Patrol

  The call comes after an American warship neared disputed islands in the South China Sea. Beijing has described the actions by the US navy as extremely irresponsible and urged Washington to cease actions which would harm China’s sovereignty and security interests. The Chinese Foreign Ministry has already lodged a protest with the US over the incident.

  Beijing’s outcry comes after the U-S-S Lassen – accompanied by the Pentagon’s most advanced spy plane, entered waters near Subi Reef of China’s Nansha Islands. They are part of reefs and archipelagos disputed between China and the Philippines. Manila meanwhile has welcomed the sail-past as a way to help maintain the balance of power. But Beijing says it would damage Sino-American relations and regional peace.
