Reports say Israel has made and exploded bombs laced with nuclear materials in its southern desert. Israeli media say Tel Aviv exploded the so-called dirty bombs to test their impacts. The project is said to have included 20 detonations, most of them conducted in the Negev desert. The region is home to many Bedouin Palestinians. Israeli officials have refused to comment on the reports. Tel Aviv is believed to be the only possessor of nuclear bombs in the Middle East, leading an extensive undeclared nuclear weapons program. It has also refused to join the international Non-proliferation Treaty known as the NPT.
