  Defense Secretary Ashton Carter’s war threats against Iran were made with the backing of the Israel lobby and neo-conservatives in the United States, says an analyst and activist from New York.

  Carter said on Friday that the US’ bunker-busting bombs are ready to destroy Iran’s nuclear facilities if necessary. “We continue to improve it and upgrade over time so that there is this alternative.”
  –
  The US military has the capability to “shut down, set back and destroy the Iranian nuclear program,” he told CNN. Carter made the remarks amid the ongoing negotiations between the P5+1 and Iran over its nuclear program.

  On April 2, a landmark framework agreement was reached between Tehran and the P5+1 group – the US, Britain, France, China, Russia and Germany – in Switzerland. The two sides will work to draw up a final accord by the end of June.

  Eric Draitser, the founder of Stopimperialism.com, said Ashton Carter has been presented as a “hawkish element” in the Obama administration, which is backed by the Israel lobby and its power base in the US.

  “Ashton Carter is speaking to a distinctly different base of support, base of power, that being the Israel lobby, the neo-con establishment and many of the other more right-wing elements in the US government and in the Washington political establishment broadly,” he told Press TV on Saturday.

  He went on to say that “the Obama administration is essentially attempting to play both sides of this conflict, they want to reach some kind of a tentative agreement while at the same time they want to maintain the war posture, they want to maintain a belligerent rhetoric towards Iran.”

  “This sort of schizophrenic language from the US government is in keeping with the broader policy of saber-rattling,” he noted.

  Draitser said that if the leader of any other country used such inflammatory language against the United States, it would be viewed as “a provocation and possibly a pretext of war.”
