The decision was reportedly made after discovering more underground tunnels with a total length of up to 1,000 meters. In order to create the buffer zone, the Egyptian army is evacuating and destroying several houses belonging to Gazans along the frontier. Egypt started setting up the buffer zone in late October, following a wave of deadly attacks in the Sinai Peninsula. Officials say the buffer zone is needed to preserve national security and stability. Attacks in Sinai have increased since ex-president Mohamed Morsi was ousted by the military last year.
