  American peace activist Richard #Becker says the US empire has been trying to capture Ukraine in order to bring it into its orbit. Becker, a leader of the ANSWER Coalition, a US-based protest umbrella group consisting of many antiwar and civil rights organizations, made the remarks on Sunday while commenting on a statement by #Washington against the elections in eastern Ukraine.

  On Sunday, the people in #Ukraine’s #Luhansk and #Donetsk regions went to the polls to elect their leaders and parliamentarians.

  The United States said it would not recognize the elections in Ukraine’s eastern regions, where the United Nations says over 4,000 people have been killed. “We deplore the intent of separatists in parts of eastern Ukraine to hold illegitimate so-called local elections on Sunday,” White House National Security Council spokeswoman Bernadette Meehan said in the statement issued on Friday.

  Becker said that the US empire has been “trying to capture Ukraine to bring Ukraine as a whole… into their orbit, into the orbit of Washington and then to NATO.”

  “Many people in Ukraine, particularly in the eastern part but not exclusively there, are resistant of this agenda, and are resisting the austerity government that comes to power in Kiev through the illegal overthrow of the former government,” he added.

  “So when we take all those factors into account we really must dismiss US complaints, the US claims, the #US and #NATO denunciation of the election that is taking place today,” the peace activist stated.

  He went on to say that the election is “part of the drive for self-determination of the people Ukraine, and neither the US nor NATO has any right to interfere.”

  The elections came amid ongoing fighting between the Ukrainian army and the pro-#Russia forces in the volatile east. Ukraine’s mainly Russian-speaking regions in the east have been the scene of deadly clashes between protesters and the Ukrainian army since the government in #Kiev launched military operations in mid-April in a bid to crush the protests.

  Elsewhere in his remarks, Becker said, “The United States’ government has sponsored the breaking up of many countries over the years. It separated Panama from Colombia in order to build the Panama Canal a century ago; it created South Korea, it created South Vietnam, which no longer exists, more recently it created South Sudan [by] splitting it away from Sudan, it created, of course,…Israel.”
