Press TV has conducted an interview with Yousef al-Helou, Palestinian journalist from London, about the ongoing Israeli military offensive against the Gaza Strip.

What follows is an approximate transcription of the interview.
Press TV: Mr. al-Helou, your take on that. Now our guest in Washington is basically saying that was has happened and I am assuming because he did not say that they were war crimes that are being committed that what we have heard now for a while saying that it is Hamas or military individuals that are hiding amongst the residents and this of course causes the problem with the loss of civilian lives.

Al-Helou: Well this is the Israeli claim. Now what is happening in Gaza is beyond imagination and it continues to happen as a result of the international conspiracy of silence. Israel enjoys a culture of impunity and over the years we know that Israel has been justifying its attacks saying and presenting all these allegations saying that it attacks these sites because Hamas is using these sites as human shields.

But when you look at the casualties, more than 85 percent of the casualties are civilians including 400 children and the massive destruction that Israel is doing right now. Israel wants to send Gaza back to the Stone Age in an attempt to push Gazans to revolt against the resistance.

Now what the people of Gaza are asking for, they are asking for basic human rights, they are not conditions or demands by the resistance groups in Gaza. Now, as everybody knows Gaza is the world’ largest open Arab prison. Nearly two million people live in this territory have been under siege for the past seven years unable to live. Israel has been blockading Gaza’s coast since 1967 since it occupied the West Bank and Gaza and East Jerusalem and the closure of the crossings.

So people say life is meaningless under the siege and you could see the frustration and anger that people say that they are dismayed by the [attitude] of this so-called international community for not taking action and when you look at the American position, Obama or Mr. Kerry would say that Israel has got the right to defend itself. What about the Palestinian side? The Palestinian side are the victims of this onslaught. You know this onslaught has been going for the past 27 days claiming most civilian lives, attacking civilian properties, hospitals were attacked, mosques, and graveyards.

Now what is happening in Gaza, Israel is transforming Gaza which is the world’s largest open Arab prison or concentration camp into the world’s largest graveyard. Whenever Israel drops a bomb here or there obviously casualties will lose their lives and for the third time we see now one of the United Nations schools was attacked today in defiance, in a flagrant violation of international law. People are seeking shelter in these schools. There is no electricity, there is no water, public services are badly affected so people describe what is happening in Gaza is a genocide.

When you deliberately target civilian areas, kill children to justify saying that it is because the resistance factions in Gaza, they do this and that, but when you look at the confrontations that are taking place in the border, we see that all of the confrontations actually take part or take place along the border side.

So the Israeli side, of course they keep changing their stated goal. The first goal was to seek revenge after the missing of the three Jewish settlers and then they said we are invading Gaza because we want to put an end to the rocket fire and then they came up with a new goal saying that oh, we are here to destroy the tunnels and now they are ultimately saying well we are here to free our captured soldier.
