A new set of US and European sanctions imposed against Russia over the crisis in Ukraine is a “pretext” to provoke Moscow into a military conflict with the West, a political commentator in Washington says.
–
President Barack Obama and the European Union imposed new sanctions on Russia Tuesday that they said will further damage its economy and force President Vladimir Putin to end his support of pro-Russian forces in eastern Ukraine.
–
The new economic measures target Russia’s state-owned banks, arms manufacturers, oil and gas companies, as well as close associates of Putin.
–
“I think that the whole sanctions business is a gigantic fraud and provocation and that the real underlying danger here is that the continuing provocations coming particularly out of the British and out of the Obama administration are going to lead us into a hot war, not a cold war,” said Jeff Steinberg, a senior editor for the Executive Intelligence Review.
–
The new Western sanctions are based on “unfounded allegations” that the Russians were complicit in the shooting down of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 earlier this month, Steinberg told Press TV on Wednesday.
–
“The real story here is that there’s been a decision made in London and in Washington to start a direct confrontation with Russia [and] Ukraine is a pretext,” he added. “There’s a similar phenomenon going on, less advanced at the moment, but going on nevertheless, directed against China as well.”
–
Washington and Moscow have been at loggerheads over the crisis in Ukraine. The US accuses Russia of supporting and arming pro-Russian forces in eastern Ukraine, a claim which is rejected by Moscow.
–
Steinberg stated that “criminal bankers and their political stooges” in the US and Europe are pushing for a war with Russia in order to diverge attention from the West’s collapsing financial system.
–
“When you’re on the verge of a financial, systemic collapse, very often the powerful financial interests that would stand to lose the most decide that now is the time to find a scapegoat target and go to war to distract attention away,” he said.
