The recalling of the Russian ambassador to NATO came on Thursday, two days after NATO member nations announced a suspension of military and civilian cooperation with Russia.
–
“The policy of deliberate [sic] whipping up tensions is not our choice, nonetheless, we see no possibility to continue military cooperation with NATO in a routine regime,” Russian Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov said, according to ITAR-TASS. “We took a decision to recall Russia’s chief military representative at NATO, Colonel General Valery Yevnevich, for consultations in Moscow.”

While NATO figures have said that Russia is building up troops along the border with Ukraine and could invade Ukraine in less than 12 hours of getting the order, Russia turned the accusation back on NATO.
–
“The secretary general of the alliance showed up with a number of confrontational statements once again,” Antonov said. “Such actions on the background of unprovoked build-up of NATO forces in Eastern Europe in the exact proximity to the Russian borders in no way promote the de-escalation of tensions in the region.”

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said earlier that Moscow wants answers from NATO about their activities in Eastern Europe after NATO said it would increase defenses for eastern member states, CNN reports.
–
After NATO’s recent meetings, foreign ministers decided to begin drawing up plans to reinforce defenses in the eastern region near Russia.
–
The measures have not been concretely defined as of yet, but they could include sending NATO soldiers and equipment to Eastern European allies, carrying out more military exercises and ensuring that the NATO rapid-reaction force can deploy more quickly, according to a NATO official.
–
NATO’s military plans may also be reviewed in reaction to Russian actions in Crimea.
–
Lavrov also responded to the Western criticism of Russian troop movements near their border with Ukraine. “Russian troops in the Rostov region will return to their bases after completing military exercises,” Lavrov said. He also said that Russia has the right to move their troops in their territory.
