  Lebanon’s news daily, Al Akhbar, citing a Saudi source, reported today that Saudi Arabia is presently in talks with Pakistan to provide anti-aircraft and anti-tank rockets to Syrian rebels to try to tip the balance in the war to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad of Syria.

  Pakistan makes its own version of Chinese shoulder-launched anti-aircraft missiles, known as Anza, and anti-tank rockets, both of which Riyadh is trying to get for the rebels, said the source who, Al Akhbar notes, is close to Saudi decision-makers. Al Akhbar also pointed to a visit to Riyadh earlier this month by Pakistan’s army chief of staff, General Raheel Sharif, who met Crown Prince Salman bin Abdul Aziz. Prince Salman himself last week led a large delegation to Pakistan, shortly after Saudi’s chief diplomat, Prince Saud al-Faisal, visited the kingdom’s key ally.

  Citing Western and Arab diplomats as well as foreign-backed Syrian opposition sources, the Wall Street Journal reported on Feb. 22 an increased flow of weapons to the Syrian terrorists by Riyadh. Saudi Arabia has offered to give the opposition for the first time Chinese man-portable air defense systems, or Manpads, and antitank guided missiles from Russia, the journal said. A Western diplomat with knowledge of the weapons deliveries told the journal that new stuff is arriving imminently.

  A recent spate of online videos on jihadist forums show Syrian children and teenagers are undergoing jihadi armed training. One video posted to a jihadist web site shows a four-year-old child being taught by foreign fighters from the al-Qaeda-linked Islamic State of Iraq and Levant, commonly known as ISIS, to fire an AK47 assault rifle. On the video, the child says he was born in Uzbekistan and explains he has been given the same name as ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Jihadists surrounding him appear to come from Gulf countries, judging by their accents.

  This development is a direct consequence of an increased amount of cash from Saudi Arabia that is now flowing into Syria to strengthen the terrorists. Vali Nasr, an American academic, a member of the State Department’s Foreign Affairs Policy Board, and a senior adviser to the U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Ambassador Richard Holbrooke, between 2009 and 2011, in an article with the Pakistani newsdaily, The Express Tribune, said: “If you are a jihadi, the place to be is Syria; that is where all the money is at the moment.”
