Minister of Education Hakubun Shimomura has defended the decision as a natural attempt by the government to teach its territory correctly to all Japanese children. Tokyo has been embroiled in a row with Beijing over the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea, which are called Diaoyu in Chinese. Tokyo is also at odds with Seoul over the sovereignty of a pair of islets known as Dokdo that are administered by South Korea. Japan calls these islets Takeshima and claims sovereignty over them. Meanwhile, South Korea’s Foreign Ministry has summoned the Japanese Ambassador to lodge a protest over the issue.
