It has now been confirmed by Defense News and reported in the Libya Herald that the Obama administration has decided to provide basic combat training to the Libyan armed forces. According to Pentagon spokesman Colonel Steve Warren, the U.S. is prepared to provide training to 5,000 to 8,000 personnel. In mid-September, the Bulgarian government announced it had approved an American request to train up to 8,000 Libyan soldiers at two bases in the country. According to Adm. William McRaven, commander of SOCOM (US Special Operations Command), there are also plans to train a separate counter-terrorism unit.

As LaRouche PAC has long reported, the deputy minister of defense and the head of the National Guard in Libya is Khalid al-Sharif. Khalid al-Sharif is the deputy emir of the al-Qaeda affiliated Libyan Islamic Fighting Group.

On October 24, Haaretz published an article which includes the following: “As if the bizarre and complex connection between the government and the militias and the formers total dependence on the latters goodwill weren’t enough, one could go back to January 2013 when Zeidan appointed Khaled al-Sharif as deputy defense minister. Sharif was deputy emir of Al-Qaida’s forces in Libya, and formerly one of the key Al-Qaida operatives in Afghanistan. After the American attack on Afghanistan in 2001, Sharif fled to Pakistan, where he remained until 2003. Then he was extradited to the Americans, who held him for two years before turning him over to Gadhafi. Sharif was released in 2010, jailed a year later, and released again after the revolution, when he established the National Guard with none other than Abdel-Hakim Belhaj—Sharif’s former cellmate and purported Libyan Al-Qaida head.”

When Prime Minister Zeidan was abducted by the Libya Revolutionaries Operations Room, according to the New York Times it was Khalid al-Sharif who reportedly negotiated his release. The aforementioned Haaretz article reports that the head of the Libya Revolutionaries Operations Room, Sheikh Shaban Masoud Ahdieh was the right-hand man of Abu Anas al-Libi, the al-Qaeda leader apprehended by U.S. special forces at the beginning of October.

In the aftermath of the recent fighting in Tripoli on November 15, which resulted in 43 dead and 460 wounded, it was Khalid al-Sharif who, according to the Libya Herald, ordered the Tripoli Local Council to demolish all of the buildings belonging to Qaddafi-regime officials in the district of Gharghour, from which the Misratan forces had fired on demonstrators. The decision (number 14328-38) was reportedly issued on November 17 after “a series of meetings with many officials and influential people of Tripoli.”

The question is, hasn’t Obama already done enough damage by working with the al-Qaeda affiliated Libyan Islamic Fighting Group to overthrow Qaddafi? Will the U.S. Congress allow Obama now to train an army which is clearly run by Al-Qaeda operatives Khalid al-Sharif and Abdel Hakim Belhadj? Is the U.S. military so foolish as to proceed with this suicidal endeavor?
