I’ve been making the same comparison lately between Sunni-Shia and Catholic-Protestant wars, and people have been surprised to hear it. Thank you so much for touching on that fact! The media has downplayed the importance of this in their attempt to fuel popular support of a possible strike on Syria, and I think it’s something that should be SHOUTED OUT over and over again. These two branches of Islam hate each other and the Syrian conflict is a jihad for all the foreign Sunni fighters that have traveled there to take part. Throughout history, there has been genocidal persecution of Shia people in Sunni lands, and to cause their deaths has been regarded as something you are rewarded for in heaven, sometimes to a far greater extent than causing the deaths of Christians. How can this monumental fact be ignored by the media? For the U.S. to side with Sunni and Al-Qaeda fighters makes no sense considering it’s stance of the last 12 years. The U.S. has been instrumental in creating this conflict by invading Iraq, deposing the minority Sunni regime of Hussein and empowering the Shia majority in the new, supposedly democratic government that exists now. The Shia branch of Islam has much greater power now than it did before the Iraq invasion, and the Sunnis of the world (the Arab League of Nations) are uniting to mitigate its influence where they can. Assad’s Shia minority government has been targeted first. For U.S. interests, the phrase “divide and conquer” comes to mind, but I wonder if this was even a part of the plan, seeing how little people like McCain know about this vast, bloody religious divide?
