  As reflected in Russia’s strong denunciation of the Israeli airstrikes on Syrian sites in Lebanon on January 30, the Israeli bombings have drawn further denunciations. But there are also signs that because of these Israeli strikes, the fighting might spread to neighboring countries. In addition, there are reports from Israeli experts and from TIME magazine in the U.S., that the Israeli strikes will continue and are broader than initially reported.

  The strongest response was from Russia as reported earlier, that no matter what the excuse, the attack on Syria violates international law. Warnings that the attack violated Syrian sovereignty were also voiced by both UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and by the Arab League, whose president, Nabil al-Arabi, said the lack of international reaction in the past to  Israel’s bombing of Syrian sites “encouraged it [Israel] to carry out the new aggression, taking advantage of political and security deterioration in Syria.”

  Syrian ambassador to Lebanon Ali Abdul-Karim, said Syria may retaliate, and that a “surprise decision to respond to the aggression of the Israeli warplanes” may be taken. At the same time, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister is quoted in the New York Times saying that there will be “grave consequences for Tel Aviv.”

  A report in Time magazine Feb. 1 also raises the issue that the U.S. could become a target of retaliation because of close coordination between the U.S. and the Israeli attack, alleged by reporters Aaron Klein (of WND.net) and Karl Vick. Klein and Vick report that the U.S. gave the “green light” for the attack while a top Israeli military intelligence official was actually in the Pentagon. The article then quotes unnamed Israeli sources saying that Israel is not only concerned about Syrian weapons getting to Hezbollah in Lebanon, but also getting into the hands of jihadist rebels in Syria. So, it is likely that Israel will attack further.

  The most serious commentaries, however, come from Israeli sources, saying that the Israeli attacks are just the beginning: The New York Times quotes Maj. Gen. Giora Eiland (IDF, ret.), the former head of the Israeli National Security Council (under Sharon), saying that the attack is likely to go further. “From the moment they [Syria] chose to say Israel did something, it means someone has to do something after that,” Eiland said. Though Eiland worked for Sharon, he also had a role with Shimon Peres in peace talks with the Palestinians.
