  Many would prefer to convince themselves that the very fact of the loudness and repetitiveness with which Israel’s Bibi Netanyahu and Ehud Barak have been threatening to bomb Iran, somehow indicates that they don’t mean what they say. Do people really telegraph a war through the mass media, they ask? Well, sometimes they do. Didn’t you learn as much from Tony Blair’s 2003-2011 Iraq War?

  Those who want an exhaustive demonstration that Bibi and Barak really mean it, can read Laura Rozen’s Aug. 14 interview with Colin Kahl in www.al-monitor.com. Kahl was Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for the Mideast from 2009 until the end of 2011, travelling to Israel 13 times during that period. In the interview, he painstakingly refutes every possible excuse to deny this reality. They do in fact mean it.

  But what’s really going on? The U.S. government, through the Department of Defense, has a veto over any overt, foreknown action of any Israeli government, especially military action. Israel depends on the DOD for all its military capacity. But today, the DOD says “No!” Yet they are going to bomb anyway. Why? Because Obama says “Yes!”
