    One of the most oft-cited and criticized goals of the Black Lives Matter organization is its stated desire to abolish the family as we know it. Specifically, BLM’s official website states:

The report cites the work of scholars who have worked to promote “progressive” reinterpretations of faith traditions, adding that the source of gender-based violence or discrimination is not necessarily religions, but, rather, certain interpretations of them, “which are not protected per se.”

The 1970 amendment was induced by the debate on “Who is a Jew?“. Until then the law did not refer to the question. There are several explanations for the decision to be so inclusive. One is that as the Nuremberg Laws did not use a halakhic definition in its definition of “Who is a Jew”, the Law of Return definition for citizenship eligibility is not halakhic either. Another explanation is the 1968 wave of immigration from Poland, following an antisemitic campaign by the government. These immigrants were very assimilated and had many non-Jewish family members.[11]

    Israeli news resource YNET is quoting an official document it had obtained from the Israeli office in charge of population and immigration statistics, which reports that around 180 thousand new immigrants came to Israel under the auspices of the Law of Return since 2012, but that only 14% of them are actually Jewish.

    The Law of Return specifies that any person whose mother is Jewish or who has undergone an approved conversion is eligible to enter Israel and settle in it as a citizen. However, in order to allow Jewish repatriation from the USSR, the law was amended in 1970 to include those people whose parents were eligible under the original law and the spouses of any eligible person, even when they are not Jewish.

    The reason for the amendment had to do with the nature of the Soviet Jewry, which had two different problems. First, the extreme upheavals of the 1917 Bolshevik revolution, the following civil war and soon thereafter the Second World War made archival data such as birth certificates and marriage certificates difficult to obtain as many if not most were lost. Second, the persecutions Jews were subjected to in the post-war USSR drove many to change their names and prefer marriage to Gentiles in order to hide their true identity.

    This amendment resulted in what is estimated as 350 thousand non-Jews who repatriated under the Law of Return to be presently living in Israel. These people, all Israeli citizens, are recorded in Israeli official records as “other” under both the “nationality” the “religion” rubric and they cannot marry people who are recorded as Jews unless they do so outside of Israel.

    Digging deeper into the data, among the 180 thousand repatriates the majority were from the Russian Federation and from Ukraine, among whom the fractions of actual Jews were 4.3% and 8%, respectively. Among repatriates from France, 27% were Jewish and from the US, 30%. Anecdotally, this likely means that only one third of American Jews are actually Jews, bringing the Jewish population of America closer to two million and not the oft spoken about six million.

    Considering that these people are Israeli citizens and considering further that Israel is a country in which national and religious affiliation are officially recorded for each person, this disparity between definitions of Jewishness creates a significant minority whose registration rather than being, say Jewish/Jewish (as mine is) or Arab/Christian, is Other/Other.

    All the while, these people speak Hebrew, serve in the IDF, and contribute in every way to Israeli society. Even more importantly, in a country that is substantially divided into Jews and everyone else, they see themselves firmly on the Jewish side of the ledger, even if officially they are not.

    This situation, especially as it comes to the issue of marriage, is reaching crisis proportions and will have to be dealt with via some sort of mechanism sooner rather than later. One possibility would be mass conversions, a fairly rare, though not unprecedented event in Jewish history. While the latter is anathema to the politically powerful religious sector in Israel, the former seems to be beyond the very limited capacity of the Chief Rabbis to innovate as their predecessors had done when the times demanded it.

    Until the early 1980s, like millions of Christians, I believed the racial purity of the Jewish people confirmed Scripture. I saw it as vindicating Biblical prophecy that the Jewish people would not cease to exist. I was forced to reconsider by the compelling evidence of Arthur Koestler’s book The Thirteenth Tribe. Koestler’s thesis has been highly contested, but today new evidence is emerging to support it.

    Koestler said that in about the 8th century AD the Khazars, a nation living in Central Urasia, converted to Judaism. They migrated to Poland and created the eastern European or “Ashkenazim” branch of Jewry. This would have been the largest influx of Gentile converts of all time. Koestler concluded that most Zionist Jews today, being Ashkenazim, have no genetic inheritance from Abraham; they are proselytes who seized land in Palestine that never belonged to their true ancestors.

They said the Ashkenazim (9 million in 1900) were not descendants of Gentile converts but came primarily from a small (50,000) 15th century population of Jews in Germany.     We show that the Khazarian Hypothesis offers a comprehensive explanation to the results…By contrast, the Rhineland Hypothesis could not explain the large Caucasus component in European Jews, which is rare in Non-Caucasus populations (Figure 5) and the large IBD regions shared between European Jews and Caucasus populations attesting to their common origins. A major difficulty with the Rhineland Hypothesis, in addition to the lack of historical and anthropological evidence to the multi-migration waves from Palestine to Europe (Straten 2003; Sand 2009), is to explain the vast population expansion of Eastern European Jews from 50 thousand (15th century) to 8 million (20th century). This growth could not possibly be the product of natural population expansion (Koestler 1976; Straten 2007), particularly one subjected to severe economic restrictions, slavery, assimilation, the Black Death and other plagues, forced and voluntary conversions, persecutions, kidnappings, rapes, exiles, wars, massacres, and pogroms (Koestler 1976; Sand 2009). Such an unnatural growth rate (1.7-2% annually) over half a millennia, affecting only Jews residing in Eastern Europe is commonly explained by a miracle (Atzmon et al. 2010). Unfortunately, this divine intervention explanation poses a new kind of problem – it is not science. Our findings reject the Rhineland Hypothesis and uphold the thesis that Eastern European Jews are Judeo-Khazars in origin. Further studies are necessary to confirm the magnitude of the Khazars demographic contribution to the demographic presence of Jews in Europe (Polak 1951; Dinur 1961; Koestler 1976; Baron 1993; Brook 2006).
