EMMANUEL MACRON is planning a greater role for France in the post-Brexit EU but could face resistance from some quarters who find his manner abrasive, according to one of his senior advisors.

The French President has carefully constructed a web of political alliances across the bloc since sweeping to power in 2017 as he seeks to exert greater influence from Paris. Senior aide Clément Beaune said: “The president has laid out the conceptual framework — we’re not going to do the Sorbonne speech every year. We are now in the implementation phase.”

Mr Beaune, who has advised Mr Macron since he was economy minister in 2014, told politico.eu the idea was to create a “strategy of influence”. He said: “This means, ahead of a Commission decision, we can suggest ideas, go on a tour of capitals, make contributions, write papers with other countries.”
