  DONALD Trump made a veiled threat against Iran in his State of the Union speech today.

  Tensions between the two countries have escalated following mutual strikes between them. Trump has recently insisted he wants to keep troops in neighbouring Iraq in order to “watch Iran”. He hopes to maintain a military presence in the country despite withdrawing troops from Syria and Afghanistan.

  During his State of the Union address, Trump said: “We will not avert our eyes from a regime that chants Death to America and threatens genocide against the Jewish People.”

  Last month Israel admitted it had attacked Iranian military targets in Syria in what was one of the first times the state has taken responsibility for any strike on Syria. Iran and Hezbollah are sworn enemies to Israel and have been crucial allies to Syrian President, Bashar al-Assad. In a recent interview with CNN Trump said: “We have an unbelievable and expensive military base built in Iraq.
