Right on cue, World Space Week might be about to give us a spectacular display of shooting stars this weekend, with maximum activity predicted on Monday night for sky-watchers in the northern hemisphere.

With a waning moon meaning the night skies are free of bright moonlight this weekend and through next week, the Draconids meteor shower could spring a few surprises for stargazers.

What is the Draconids meteor shower?
Shooting stars are caused by Earth’s orbit crossing a stream of dust left by a comet. The Draconids come from the leftovers from Comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner, which visits every 6.6 years, and most years it only produces only about ten shooting stars per hour. However, this year things might be different.

Why is the Draconids different this year?
Meteor showers tend to be at their most prolific when the comet that are caused them has traveled through the solar system relatively recently. That’s the case this year; early next week Earth will pass 256,000 km inside the orbit of comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner just a few weeks after the comet passed through the same region of space on September 10. A similar situation occurred in both 1933 and 1946 when Europe experienced a massive shooting star ‘storm’ with around 10,000 shooting stars per hour during the Draconids meteor shower. However, there are no guarantees since the dust trails left by the comet are narrow, so activity is hard to predict.
