  The Head of the General Commission of the Popular Conference of Palestinians Abroad has revealed that Israel and the US have undermined efforts to deploy international peacekeepers in Gaza, Shehab.ps reported on Wednesday.

  Dr Salman Abu Sitta called for the head of the Hamas Political Bureau, former Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh, to contact the UN Secretary General and ask him to send international forces to protect the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip as per the terms of the 1949 Armistice Agreement.

  The veteran researcher pointed out that the agreement stipulates the presence of international forces to protect the Palestinians from Israeli aggression on the original armistice line. “Not the current ‘border’,” he insisted, “as that is at least three kilometres from the one stipulated in the agreement.”

  The Palestinian historian explained that the armistice line is an area where the warring forces stopped. “It does not give the right to the occupier to impose its sovereignty.”

  According to Abu Sitta, the current line is called the “coexistence line” which was demarcated in a secret agreement penned in 1950 without the knowledge of many parties, among them the Palestinians.
