France, Italy Say They Won’t Increase Defense Spending Despite Trump’s Claim

France and Italy deny US President Donald Trump’s claim that NATO members will increase military spending. French President Emmanuel Macron said France only remains committed to boosting its military budget to two percent of its GDP by 2024. Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte also said he did not promise to increase his country’s military spending. Trump claimed other NATO members had agreed to increase their military budget to four percent of their GDP.
