- Merkel on Brink: Chancellor Fears ‘Domino Effect’ Will Cause EU-Wide Rift Over Migration

GERMAN Chancellor Angela Merkel fears that unless EU nations develop a consistent migration policy, a “domino effect” would cause massive problems throughout the bloc, as she battles to prevent the collapse of her beleaguered coalition Government.
Mrs Merkel, leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) made her remarks during a press conference during which she confirmed she had agreed a compromise deal with coalition partner the Christian Social Union which gives her one last chance to thrash out an EU-wide deal on migrants at the European Council summit on June 28 and 29, at which the issue will be up for discussion.
Failure to do so will almost certainly lead to the CSU demanding immigration curbs which could sink her administration. Interior Minister, and CSU chairman, Horst Seehofer wants to see Germany refuse entry to migrants who have already been registered in another European Union country such as Italy or Greece, where they often land from the Middle East or North Africa.
However, Mrs Merkel is opposed to this as she believes it would compromise Germany’s open-door policy, which saw the country welcome more than one million migrants at the height of the refugee crisis in 2015.
