  A FORMER Italian Prime Minister and European Commissioner has said Donald Trump’s election victory has strengthened the case for an EU army and increased European integration.

  Mario Monti said the “US-centric” Republican would not seek to protect European counterparts. He told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “They [European leaders] should take note of the fact that the US will be less indulgent towards the European Union.

  “It is likely to be less present [with] regards to defence of the European Union and the view [is] therefore [that] we will have to develop a doctrine for foreign policy and defence which becomes even more urgent and necessary than it has been so far.”

  The comments come as the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee is set to vote on a report calling for action following the threat of terrorism, conflict in the Middle East and increased aggression from Russia. Eurosceptics fear that federalists in the EU will seek to force through a more integrated defence strategy, including an EU army.

  Reacting to Mr Trump’s win, Mr Monti said it was now more important than ever to “grow” in order to make the case for “multilateralism”.
