Tensions are mounting between the United States and Russia on the eve of the activation of an American missile system in Romania. Russia’s Foreign Ministry says the activation, scheduled for Thursday, violates a treaty on nuclear forces signed in 1987. But senior US officials are describing it as an important step that will “help defend NATO states”. The missile system station is located in Deveselu in southern Romania. The United States insists it is not aimed against Russia, but Moscow views it as a security threat on its doorstep. Russia, infuriated by NATO’s eastward expansion, has boosted its defense capabilities along its western border.
