Azerbaijan says it has lost 12 soldiers during clashes with Armenian troops along the frontlines of the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region. Baku has confirmed that its helicopter was shot down by Armenian forces during the fighting, which is being described as the worst since 1994. The two sides exchanged fire overnight, using heavy weaponry and small arms. Nagorno-Karabakh, which is claimed by Azerbaijan, has been in the hands of ethnic Armenian forces since the end of the 1994 war. Russian President Vladimir Putin has called for an immediate ceasefire in the region. Nagorno-Karabakh lies inside Azerbaijan, but is under the control of local ethnic Armenian forces and the Armenian military. The region has been running its own affairs since a war between Azerbaijan and Armenia ended in 1994. The three-year war claimed about 30,000 lives.
