Chinese President Xi Jin-ping says his country is determined to defend its sovereignty in the South China Sea. Xi told US President Barack Obama that the disputes over the sea should be settled peacefully through direct talks. He said Beijing respects and safeguards other countries’ freedom of navigation and overflight rights under the international law. The Chinese president met with Obama on the sidelines of the nuclear summit in Washington.
