Russia Warns of Retaliatory Action Over NATO’s Expansion into Eastern Europe

  A spokesman for the Russian president says Montenegro’s accession would force Moscow to react. Dmitry Peskov added that Russia has always said that NATO’s continued expansion to the east would lead to retaliatory actions to provide security and support national interests. Peskov’s comments are made as the US-led military alliance has invited Montenegro to become NATO’s 29th member. This is NATO’s first expansion into Eastern Europe since Albania and Croatia joined six years ago.
