“I think the intentional provocation may have been by Turkey’s President Erdogan. Turkey has been a very secular nation, but he has driven it towards an Islamic society with Sharia law, et cetera. And so I think he may have a hidden agenda. He probably would not mind seeing Russia and NATO get into another conflict like we had in the Ukraine, which we do not need. … Most of Turkey’s attacks have been against the Kurds so I don’t really trust president Erdogan and what he is doing. I think we have to be very very cautious on this and .. it was an overly aggressive manoeuver and as a NORAD mission commander we would not use these kind of rules of engagement. That had to be pre-planned. That airplane wasn’t over Turkish territory long enough.”
