The Pentagon says a US bomber, which recently flew near manmade islands in the South China Sea, was contacted by Chinese ground controllers. The US flights near the man-made islands came after China deployed advanced fighter jets on the artificially-constructed landmasses in the South China Sea. The dispute between the US and China over the islands has heated up in the recent weeks. The US Navy says it will conduct patrols within 12 nautical miles of the islands. Washington believes the construction of the sandy islands is part of Beijing’s militarization of the international waters. China however insists that construction of the islands poses no threat to the region. Beijing also says breaching China’s territorial waters is a dangerous and provocative act, and the country’s military is ready to take any necessary measures in response to any future incursions by U-S vessels around islands.
