In Britain, a parliamentary report says spy agencies are reading thousands of private communications every day. The parliament’s Intelligence and Security Committee claimed the surveillance was not indiscriminate. The committee added that the mass cyber espionage is not in violation of existing laws. But it said laws governing interception of communications need total overhaul as they are too complicated and lack transparency. The report concluded an 18-month inquiry triggered by hugely controversial leaks made by former US intelligence contractor Edward Snowden. He revealed that Britain’s spy agency, the GCHQ, and its US counterpart, the NSA, were at the center of a mass cyber-espionage program that targeted global communications.
