  Aside from the strategic intentions of the British Empire to foment a war between the West and Russia—a war that would almost certainly go nuclear—another factor in the hysteria in Washington, Brussels and Kiev over the alleged Russian “invasion” of Ukraine, is the simple fact that the Kiev regime is losing the war on the ground. An offensive by the Donbass militias in areas to the east of Donetsk city and southwards along the border between Donetsk Region and Russia’s Rostov Region, all the way down to the coast of the Sea of Azov, has thrown the Kiev regime into a panic.

  According to maps published by RIA Novosti, the militias of the self-declared people’s republics in eastern Ukraine have surrounded and entrapped three groups of regime forces: about 5,000 regime troops near Yelenovka south of Donetsk; another group of about 2,000 troops near Ilovaisk (a town east-southeast of Donetsk, the scene of heavy fighting over the past 10 days), and a third group to the south of the second group, near the border town of Ulyanovksoye. The first two of these surrounded groups are evidently remnants of the attempt by Kiev to split the territory of the Donetsk People’s Republic from that of the more easterly Lugansk People’s Republic, and to surround and take Donetsk before Ukraine’s independence day, August 24. That offensive, according to numerous sources, ran out of steam in the face of fierce militia resistance in the smaller cities of Donetsk Region. On Aug. 24 the new Prime Minister of the D.P.R., Donetsk native Alexander Zakharchenko, announced that the militias had consolidated and reorganized their forces, including trophy equipment captured from the three Kiev brigades defeated in the so-called Southern Cauldron earlier in the summer, and were ready to take the offensive. Since then, militia sources have reported retaking several towns, as well as the strategic hill called Saur Mogila, between Donetsk and the Russian border, and the key town of Amvrosiyvka, 30 km southwest of that hill. One militia-linked blog reported that when militia reconnaissance units tested the roads southward from Amvrosiyivka along the border, they found them virtually undefended — the bulk of Kiev’s forces having been thrown into the battle for Donetsk. The militiamen advanced all the way to Novoazovsk, on the coast of the Sea of Azov just 45 km east of the port city of Mariupol. The Kiev regime disputes that the militias have made such advances, with national security spokesman Andrei Lysenko claiming that Ukrainian troops withdrew from Novoazovsk only in the face of oncoming “Russian armored columns.”
