  A deadly winter storm is threatening 100million people with up to 18 inches of snow and bitter cold temperatures tonight as it blasts across the Midwest and bares down on the East Coast.

  The evening commute on the first workday of 2014 could become treacherous – or even impossible – as officials urge drivers to stay off the road after 7pm and say they could even shut down major highways in New York City, Boston and elsewhere if conditions become too dangerous.

  Nearly 1,600 flights have been canceled and Boston’s Logan International Airport – one of the busiest in the nation – will shut down entirely from 8pm today until noon on Friday.

  ‘There will be travel problems,’ said Hugh Johnson, a weather service meteorologist in Albany, New York. ‘It will be very cold.’
