According to Rupert Murdoch’s Sunday Times of London, as reported in the Times of Israel, an agreement has been struck between Israel and Saudi Arabia for collaboration in possible military strikes against Iran. According to the London report, Saudi Arabia has agreed to allow Israel to use Saudi air space in an attack on Iran, and will provide military support including rescue helicopters, refueling tanker planes, and drones. The London Times quoted an unnamed diplomat reporting, “The Saudis are furious and are willing to give Israel all the help it needs.” According to the diplomatic sources cited by the Sunday Times, if a deal is struck this coming week at Geneva between the P5+1 and Iran, an Israeli military option would be back on the table and, given the strong U.S. opposition to any such military action, the Saudi logistical support would be vital.

The report in the Murdoch press failed to mention some significant obstacles to such an Israeli strike, including deep splits within the Israeli military and intelligence establishment over Netanyahu’s apocalyptic claims about Iran being close to a nuclear bomb breakout. American military specialists have also expressed significant skepticism about Israel’s actual ability to seriously damage Iran’s dispersed nuclear program.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu is already carrying out a one-man diplomatic blitz on the eve of the resumption of the Geneva talks on Wednesday. He is meeting today and tomorrow with French President Francois Hollande. While Israel and Saudi Arabia have both been lobbying in Washington for the Senate to vote up new killer sanctions against Iran in an obvious effort to sabotage any breakthrough at Geneva, this effort suffered some major defections this week, when four leading Senators announced that they would block a new sanctions vote until after the P5+1 negotiations have moved ahead. Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.), Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Cal.), Chairwoman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, and Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Ct.) of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee all said they would oppose any new sanctions at this time. And even Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), the ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, told BBC on Friday, Nov. 15, “I am skeptical of talks with Iran but willing to give the Obama administration a couple of months.”
