Obama warns eurozone ‘endgame’ in sight as debt crisis threatens to engulf Greece

Barack Obama last night scorned the lack of leadership in the eurozone amid warnings that the ‘endgame’ for the single currency is ‘approaching fast’. The U.S. President called on Germany and France to take responsibility as the crisis in debt-riddled Greece threatened to engulf Italy and the rest of the region.

And in a sign of growing alarm in Washington, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner will attend a meeting of European finance ministers in Poland on Friday. It comes as Greece lurches ever closer towards bankruptcy and borrowing costs in Italy hit a record high.

Analysts at investment bank JP Morgan have reported ‘a growing sense that the crisis is reaching a climax’ and warn the ‘endgame’ for the currency union is near. Julian Callow, chief European economist at Barclays Capital, said: ‘September is likely to be a defining month for the euro area’s destiny.’

Greece is just weeks away from running out of cash and needs the next £7 billion tranche of bailout funds to survive. But Athens must convince international inspectors that its budget is in order before the money is released.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel sought to calm talk of a Greek default or exit from the eurozone. She said the collapse of Greece would immediately lead to ‘domino effects’ across the region. ‘We face a completely new challenge, one that has no historic precedent,’ she said. ‘We want our currency to succeed. Germany is absolutely committed to this currency.’ But President Obama warned that the fragile global economy would persist until the eurozone crisis is resolved.

He said that while Greece is the immediate concern, there would be an even bigger problem if markets continue to attack Italy and Spain. The President called on European countries, led by Germany and France, to unite behind a common approach to the crisis. ‘It is difficult to coordinate and agree a common path when you have so many countries with different policies and economic situations,’ said Mr Obama. ‘In the end, the big countries in Europe, the leaders in Europe, must meet and take a decision on how to coordinate monetary integration with more effective coordinated fiscal policy.’
